Cafe de Olla
Long lines at this sidewalk cafe tell even the most jaded diner that something special is going on in the kitchen. Revered by expatriates, locals, and the lucky tourist who discovers it, this eatery is one of the few places that just keeps cooking good food without worrying about who is coming to eat. Grilled foods, including chicken and steak, are simply and tastily prepared. The grilled onions are fantastic, with a legion of adoring fans who come back just for them.
We went into town on Sunday to walk the Malancon. A guy back at the hotel said we should try this place for lunch, so we did. He was so right. They had a grilled fish special on the menu, big enough to feed the 3 of us (2 adults, 1 kid). Two rock lobsters, 7 very large butterflied shrimp, a fillet of fin fish, a twice baked potato with cheese and vegetables, all seasoned wonderfully and grilled just right. I really, really like fresh fish cooked right, and this was one of the best seafood meals I've had in a very long time. Total cost, including beverages - no room for dessert - and tip, $60. Atmosphere was pleasant. Friendly and attentive staff. Go there.
Cafe de Olla was very good. No problem, good food, and prices about same as others. There was a waiting line when we went. I would say it was worth the short wait, but there are plenty of other places that are just as good without lines.
However, at least look at the cooking area, which is right next to the sidewalk. You'll probably end up in the line waiting to get in.
We had the best time at Cafe de Olla. We've been back to Puerto Vallarta since our first trip in 2002 and it was even better the second time.
The food and drink were excellent and prepared with the love and joy that food should be prepared with.
It's location right off the main street in PV made it very easy to find and once we were there we felt like we were at home. We even met a locals person share our table with and had great conversation as well as great food and drink.
On our next visit, I'm confident that we'll return to Cafe de Olla!

What can you say?Great value, fresh food and the friendliest resturant in town.Even when I lived in Puerto Vallarta this was regular stop on my evening walks.Must tries are Mexican plate, seafood plate and the margaritas.
I have been going to Cafe de Olla for over ten years. Every time I get the pleasure of going down to PV eating at Cafe de Olla is a must. The best food and strawberry margarita's can be found here. If you are planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta make sure to include a stop here.
I went to Cafe de Olla with some visitors from Chicago last week and we had a great meal! The tortilla soup was delicious, not too spicy but not wimpy either and it has generous amounts of avacado. The chili relleno was really good. The others ordered tacos with ground beef and quesadillas with ground beef and both were enjoyed. The prices were reasonable, the bill was less than $30 US, including five beers. It was a great dinner and I will definately be back when I have visitors.
