Cestius' Bridge (Ponte Cestio / Pons Cestius), Rome

Also known as Saint Bartholomew Bridge (Ponte di San Bartolomeo), due to the proximity of the Basilica of St. Bartholomew on the Island (Basilica di San Bartolomeo all’Isola) which has sat on Tiber Island (Isola Tiberina) since 997 CE, Ponte Cestio connects the island with the Lungotevere degli Anguillara - which is to say that it spans the distance between the neighborhoods of Ripa and Trastevere. The bridge boasts nearly ancient origins: it was constructed in 62 BCE and subsequently restored various times throughout history, until, between 1885 and 1888, it was almost completely demolished. In 1891, construction recommenced which generated a chain of renovations. More than a century later, in 1999, Pons Cestius was entirely restored.
