Sixtus' Bridge (Ponte Sisto)

Description

Erected by Pope Sixtus IV between 1473 and 1479 on the ruins of the former Agrippa Bridge (Ponte di Agrippa), dating from 12 BCE, Ponte Sisto connects the Trastevere district with Regola. Over the centuries, the bridge has been renovated multiple times, particularly in the 16th and 19th Centuries. The modifications introduced by the latter restorations (consisting of, most notably, the enlargement of the walkways) were done away with by more recent construction efforts. The most recent among these, which took place in 2000, a year of the Jubilee, returned the bridges original appearance.
