Description

This historic hotel is located on Alamo Plaza, literally next door to the famed Alamo. Built in 1859, it's one of the oldest buildings in the city and is the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi River. Two American presidents became enamored with the hotel—Former President Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders enjoyed hanging out at the Menger Bar, and President Bill Clinton developed a penchant for the hotel's proprietary mango ice cream during his visits to the city. As with most of the city's oldest buildings, this hotel is reportedly haunted by as many as 32 different, friendly spectres.

Nice hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/06/2005
Recently spent 4 nights and found the hotel very lovely but work out room left much to be desired and it took forever to order food in the bar and then it was not very good.

Exciting!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/06/2005
My husband and I took our three girls to San Antonio for a brief vacation. We stayed at the Menger because of its history and distance from local attractions. We did not know that the hotel was supposedly haunted until our arrival. This was an added bonus for us as we all love a good ghost story. While we never saw any spirits floating through walls or moving across the grounds, we were all constantly filled with anticipation of the possibility! The normal "bumps" in the night were followed by gasps and giggles, and everyone eventually (quickly) ended up in the same double bed! One of the most fun weekends our family has had in quite some time.

A diamond

If you like peace and quiet, this hotel is for you! The 2 inner courtyards are wonderful! The pool is a nice size. The rocking chairs are great for sitting w/ morning coffee, a good book, or just watching the birds flutter through the garden.

Menger Hotel
By Eric H, 06/06/2005
The Menger Hotel is close to most of the downtown attractions. I had no problem walking to any of those that I visited. The Alamo is directly across the street; the visitors center is part of the same building, and the riverwalk is has entrances on both sides of the hotel. Overall, I was happy with my room and the service from the hotel.

Lovely, historic, clean and great food and service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/06/2005
I just returned from a pleasure trip to Texas. We stayed at the Menger Hotel for one week and enjoyed everything about it.

The location is perfect. It's quiet, has a lovely lobby, everything was very clean, and it is just around the corner from the Riverwalk. Our room overlooked the Alamo, it was lovely. The food at the Menger was delightful, as was the service. I had an issue with a blown lightbulb and called the desk, within 5 minutes somebody was there to change it. This was followed by a phone call in 1/2 hour to make sure the problem was corrected. Wonderful, personal service. I would stay here again. I'm a Ritz Carlton lady, but I love the Menger.
