San Diego Zoo
This world-famous establishment is clearly no ordinary zoo. Walk or ride a double-decker bus throughout this expansive park, home to over 4,000 rare and exotic animals exhibited in beautiful garden habitats. More than a park, San Diego Zoo is a major research facility although it is cleverly disguised with entertaining shows and inspiring exhibits like Polar Bear Plunge and Hippo Beach.
The zoo is awesome. Make sure to get the deluxe package. It gives you unlimited access to Skyfari and the tour bus. Most hotels/motels sell these tickets at discounted prices. Be prepared to walk a lot and have a lot of fun.
This is a great place to lose yourself for the better part of a day. The San Diego climate and the trees and vegetation combined with the sloping terrain create a fantasy realm that is an ideal setting for a creative and modern zoo.
I love the Wild Animal park too, but the zoo in Balboa Park is on a scale that is easier to deal with when you like walking with your entire family. I can't imagine a trip to San Diego without a day at the zoo.
I've been to many zoos around the country, and the San Diego zoo is by far the best ever. They are constantly expanding and developing natural habitats for their animals. They take great measures to keep the animals comfortable while still allowing us to see so many different animals of the world. Fantastic!
The Zoo has always been a beautiful place to be but the empahsis on natural habitats has created a quandry for Zoo-goers. If you are not there at the right time of day all you will see is beautifully done exhibits but no animals. On our last trip to the Zoo only about half the exhibits contained viewable animals and that is what we came to see. More effort should have been made to allow viewing most if not all times of the day.
I honestly enjoyed the old SD Zoo (first visit 1968) better. We no longer go to the SD Zoo but rather go to the Wild Animal Park instead.
While the price of the San Diego Zoo may be a bit steep, it is worth every penny. I have been to zoos all over the world and none of them compare to the San Diego Zoo. The animals have great exhibits that get better every year. The zoo tries to balance the needs of the animals with the needs of the customers and I believe that they do a great job of it. The children have a great petting zoo where they can also learn about the birth of little animals such as chicks. It is definitively a great experience worth saving up for.
