Hotel El Convento, San Juan

My fiance and I stayed at El Convento during a recent trip to Old San Juan. I had heard and read great things about the hotel.

I am not sure whether it was because of our late arrival or because of the military rate that we were charged, but we were given a junior suite. By junior suite, apparently, they meant that we were sleeping on a full bed (which they insisted was a queen!) in a room little bigger than a closet. Further, the walls in the suite were incredibly thin -- we could hear our neighbors stumble into bed around 2 AM.

The following morning we complained to the folks at the front desk. They claimed that they were completely booked and couldn't give us another room. I demanded to speak to the manager -- who then gave us a new room with an actual queen-sized bed. The remainder of our visit was uneventful.

I was appalled by the shabby treatment that we received.

At @$270 per night, there was no hot water and the inside portion of the door lock fell off so one person had to stay in the room to let the other one back in. The hotel refused to give us a discount saying that as we booked through Travelocity the hotel was not responsible for their poor maintenance. No hot water and no door lock in San Juan is a major problem and one which caused us great inconvenience.

We have tried to book a room in Feb but it is full again! We went to the Sunday buffet which is fit for a King and Queen!! The food quality is exceptional and the service outstanding, as well as the strolling quartet with those lyrical tunes of the culture as well as pops. You must go there after Mass for an elegant afternoon.
