Over-familiar staff

In October '04, my wife and I had lunch at El Farol, and while the food was good (not passable, not excellent), the young man who tried to seat us, and whose attempt was over-ridden by a waiter, crossed the line between friendly and over-familiar. We were about halfway through our meal, and the young man (who had already regaled our neighboring table with a tale about his accomplishments in high school) asked us if we wanted "more alcohol". Not beer or wine. I might expect this of a friend joking with me, but not someone refilling my water glass, or directing me to the men's room. I don't want to feel intruded upon in an uncomfortably up-close manner. This young man's lack of place made a nice meal into an experience whereby we couldn't wait to leave.
