El Farol

Description

Located in the historic Canyon Road neighborhood, this dining mainstay was here long before the area became the artists' haven. The food, atmosphere, and service all combine to make this one of the most attractive restaurants for people in the know. The menu is highly influenced by Spanish cuisine and specializes in tapas, paellas, seafood, and fine Spanish wines. After dinner, enjoy the nightly live entertainment and take a spin on the dance floor.

this is one of my favorite dining experiences in santa fe - that's saying a lot. while some may find the random appearance of dishes throughout your meal slightly off-putting, i found it delightful. each of the tapas - i went for the hot, vegetarian selections - arrived to surprise and excite the senses. try the fried avocado! it's unforgettable.

Most Creative Food in Town
By ,
As a long time, frequent visitor to Santa Fe, El Farol has become my favorite restaurant in a town loaded with top notch dining choices. It has the most creative cusine in town and a pleasant, aesthetically appealing but informally elegant atmosphere. The range of tapas is excellent and the paella is wonderful. The garden courtyard is charming when the weather permits, but the dining rooms are equally pleasant. If you want to have a good conversation with your friends, ask to be seated in one of the dining rooms away from the bar because the entertainment can be lively. The bar is also great fun if you're in the mood.

Over-familiar staff
By ,
In October '04, my wife and I had lunch at El Farol, and while the food was good (not passable, not excellent), the young man who tried to seat us, and whose attempt was over-ridden by a waiter, crossed the line between friendly and over-familiar. We were about halfway through our meal, and the young man (who had already regaled our neighboring table with a tale about his accomplishments in high school) asked us if we wanted "more alcohol". Not beer or wine. I might expect this of a friend joking with me, but not someone refilling my water glass, or directing me to the men's room. I don't want to feel intruded upon in an uncomfortably up-close manner. This young man's lack of place made a nice meal into an experience whereby we couldn't wait to leave.
