Description

Around circa 1230, Sundiata Keita—the spared-from-killing, handicap son of Kangaba ruler Maghan Kon Fatta returned from exile to free the people from the tyrannical Sasu rule to regain his father's lost empire and form the African state of Mali. Named after the Malian King, the Sundiata African American Cultural Association (SAACA) through African American artists uses various art-forms hoping to generate the same effect on people that Keita had himself. Coupling medieval art like gospel music and dance as well as modern ones like jazz and rap with tales of African history and religion, this President's Day weekend event is sure to appeal to a wide range of audience. Through the depths of African culture the Sundiata Festival helps to land inspiration to one and all.
