Khram "Spasa na Krovi" (Saviour on Spilled Blood Cathedral and Museum)

Description

This church is an impressive sight when seen from Nevskii Prospekt jutting out onto Kanal Griboedova. It has numerous stunning cupolas in the "Russian" manner, some of which are multi-colored or constructed like from geometric patterns. It is one of those places you really have to see to believe. The mosaic interior was created by over 30 artists and covers an area of 7000 square meters. The church was originally built in memory of the assassination of Alexander II, killed by a bomb in 1881 on the exact spot the cathedral stands today.

Church on Spilled Blood
By Gregory, 07/06/2005
Go late in the day (within one hour of closing) otherwise you will wait in long lines. The Church is absolutely marvelous inside and out. It's the type of archetechture you dream of before you come to Russia. The interior just went through a major rennovation. The 7000 meters of mosaic is a must see . . . it is an incredible site. Don't miss the alter that stands over the exact spot where Alexander II died. It is still maintained as the bare ground where he fell. A trip inside is worth the entry fee. There is a porta-potty at the entrance at a cost, like most rest rooms in Russia. Across the steet from the church is the largest market for tourist souvenirs that we found in St. Petersburg. Make sure you barter.
