Taronga Zoo
Description
Opened in 1884, the Taronga Zoo is the first public zoo in New South Wales. The Zoo has gone through much renovation and redevelopment featuring updated exhibits and an Asian Rainforest, which provides a unique insight into the majesty and wonder of the jungle homes of an amazing array of rare Asian wildlife including Asian Elephants, Silvery Gibbons, Francoise Langurs, Asian Turtles, and Fishing Cats. The Taronga Zoo is continually building and updating its cultural and educational displays and precincts in order to provide the ultimate in family fun. Be sure to check out the free animal presentations and shows throughout the day.
It was great being able to get close to the koalas and the giraffes. We were actually able to feed carrots to the giraffes. The boat and tram ride to get there from the harbour were excellent.
The fact that taronga have held elephants in quarantine overseas without the appropriate permission to import them is one of the cruelest things I have heard of. The elephant languishes in quarantine while the zoo promotes itself as friendly to animals... bulls..t
I loved it, and I loved the animals. Australian animals are VERY friendly! The recreation of the rainforest was breathtaking when I was there in 1989. I'm sure it's even more so now!
This Zoo is striking, the Landscape is wonderful and the animals are wonderful with one of the largest varieties I have seen. I especially enjoyed the Koala's. It is a must see.
We were delighted to see the wonderful polar bear exhibit. We live in Alaska and feel the living conditions you provided were excellent for the polar bears. Thank you.
