Exploring Copenhagen

ImageWe arrived at 11am on Friday morning, and jumped on the Airport train to travel into the City Centre. This was super quick and convenient, and cost less than £3.00! The location of our hotel, The Comfort Excelsior, was fantastic - two minutes from the Rail Station - perfect for me and my heavy bags! We could also see the towering roller coasters of Tivoli Gardens from our bedroom, so we new we'd found a great spot!

After checking in, we decided to look around the town - making the most of the sunshine while finding our feet in Copenhagen. The streets were buzzing - and the shops and multiple street side cafes create a very cosmopolitan atmosphere. We stopped off for a (massive!) icecream, and soaked up the Danish sun.

Fun in Tivoli Gardens

ImageThis was the highlight of our trip - Tivoli Gardens!! Despite the rain, we had an amazing day riding the rollercoasters, and playing in the fairground.  The tickets are not cheap at around £30 for a pass which allows you unlimited access to all of the rides, but it was definitely worth the expense.

As night falls, Tivoli really comes into it's own - and is lit up by over 100,000 fairy lights! The entire park is alive with music, and is even busier than the day time.  After popping back to the hotel to get glammed up, we went back to Tivoli to dine in one of the many restaurants.

Dinner (and candy floss) was followed by a few Danish beers, and then we joined the masses to watch the infamous Tivoli midnight fireworks. Fantastic night!

Christiana and Canal Tours

ImageImageImageOn Sunday, most of the shops and cafes in Copenhagen are closed, so we headed to Christiana to explore Denmark's 'hippy' commune. A disused army barracks, 'Free Christiana' is now an ungoverned community, infamous for a 60's vibe and uninhibited inhabitants.

My boyfriend thought it was great, but I felt a little uncomfortable here. Interesting experience, but I didn't feel too welcome as a tourist! Be wary of taking photographs - the locals don't like it!

We then headed back into the city center for a drink by the canal, before taking a guided waterways tour. This is a fab way to see the city, and check out the Little Mermaid and the Opera House while avoiding the crowds. Only a shame it was raining (again)!

For dinner, we went to Peder Oxe, situated in a quaint little square.  The food was amazing and very good value - and certainly lined our stomaches for a night in Copenhagen's finest bars!

Traditonal Danish brunch and an eye-opening experience!

We woke up with sore heads, so headed out for a hearty brunch. The sun was shining, so we ate in the City square, and experienced traditional Danish food... bread, cheese, bacon and eggs, smoked salmon... and lots of herring!!! Strangely enough our brunch was also served with chocolate cake - but I wasn't complaining!

With renewed energy, we visted Copenhagen's famous Erotica Museum - certainly an experience!
