Having been twice to Luxor recently, February and December 2006, I must say that I fell totally in love with Egypt. Maybe it's the call of my genes (Egyptian father) but Luxor is indeed an open air museum. We stayed at the Sonnesta which is right on the Nile (East bank) with it's own mini quay alongside which the feluccas wait. Yes, we were kidnapped the first night and taken to the tourist shop, but nothing that we could not handle. We were entertained every night by strolling along the main street and getting invited into all the various shops, being plied with drinks (non alcoholic) and making friends with the locals. In fact we still keep in touch with one or two friends we made whilst there. The Sonnesta is opposite the St Joseph Hotel at which two can eat for about £5.00 (2 courses) and there's a cosy downstair bar where there are two happy hours which seem to merge into the whole evening so it's very cheap to spend an evening there and very friendly. We visited Brooke Animal Hospital (founded by Dorothy Brooke in the 1920s, of which we are supporters), and it was wonderful to see how the animals fare so much better than previously but still so much work to do. Never did we feel uneasy or under duress as the Egyptians are so amazingly friendly and, yes, God fearing! No fear of mugging, unless by a mosquito. In fact the most to worry about is a stomach upset but, thankfully, we were both fine. Travelling along the Nile is the most amazing experience - it's like travelling back in time. The scenes are biblical and the children run along the banks waving and, no doubt, asking for an English pound! Sure, the poverty is an eye opener but surely that's what travel is all about.

Went with my best friend and our two 12yr old daughters it was fab, cruising on the Nile and seeing all the fantastic sights. We thought we would have a look at a dockside market one time and the only advice I can give is try and take notice of your boat. They all line up by linking all the foyers together so when you go ashore you may walk through another 4 boats to get there, thats ok until one needs to move on,they then all shuffle around to let that one out. We must of walked through as least 10 different boats(panic slowly building) trying to find ours we didnt even know the colour, but I must say all the Sailors on shore were brilliant in helping us find the right boat even though we did feel a little stupid.

I was in Egypt a very long time ago about the time when Nassar was in power who was going to turn the Red Sea absolutely red with the Jews blood. Well! he went first and Egypt became a lot better and alive. I have been thinking of going to Egypt for a very long time. As I was about to go lot of tourists were shot down by the terrorists for the sole purpose of destroying tourist industry, the Egyptian life line. It is now a moderate and increasing modern country and I hope to go there with my family - four of us - in November-December this year provided no more terrorist attacks take place. I do want to visit historic places in Egypt especially a trip on the Nile and Valley of the Kings. I will go to Sharm or Luxur for 8 nights but not if Egyptian government cannot control the murderers . I wish well for modern and moderate Egypt. I have been to 31 countries of the five continents and it would be an enjoyable experience to have a nice holiday in a 5 star all inclusive hotel. Anthony Nixon
