Description
To get here take the N-II as far as El Fresno and turn to the right towards Morata. Illueca was the Medieval Illicata and has an impressive castle-palace on a rocky hill. It was built between the 14th and 17th centuries. It belonged to the noble Luna family, whose members became Bishops, Archbishops, counts and dukes not only in Aragón but also in Castilla. In this castle Pedro de Luna y Gotor, who became Pope, was born in 1328. Pope Luna Benedict XIII, was the last Pope of Avignon. He had to leave Avignon and was exiled to his palace in Peñiscola where he continued designating cardinals as the only legitime Pope. In this castle he was buried until the 18th century, when his remains were moved.
